We had a great turnout for our ESL Family Night in the spring. Families were able to enjoy great multicultural food, and spend time looking at student projects and getting to know each other. Here are some pictures from the event.
Last year, we began having ESL Family Nights to help ESL teachers, students, and their families to connect and share ideas and resources with each other. This fall, our ESL Family Night took place at Orchard Hills Elementary as a precursor to parent-teacher conferences. We provided families with information about their students’ progress in English and helped them prepare for their conferences with classroom teachers. We also had a lot of fun meeting all the families and seeing connections being made!
This month our ESL Family Night will take place at Willard High School as a celebration of the different cultural backgrounds of our students. Did you know that we have students from 18 different countries here in Willard? We also have students from 2 different subcultures in the United States as well. Students in the Willard ESL program have been working hard over the past two months to create a project about their “home culture” or the culture their family is from. Some of them were very knowledgeable about their culture before the project started, and some of them have learned a lot they didn’t know before over the course of the project. It has been a joy to see the students get excited about their heritage and where they come from; they are seeing their cultural background more as a resource than as an obstacle to overcome or change. Students will be presenting their projects at the ESL Family Night, and families will be bringing multicultural dishes to share as well. We hope you will plan to join us on Wednesday, April 25th from 6-8 pm as we celebrate the cultural resources these students bring to Willard schools! |
